Schedule an Appointment

The Office of Career Services prefers to work by appointment, however, there are resources available in our lobby for most walk-in customers.  To learn more about which services require an appointment, Career Services staff is organized, as follows:

Maria James, Secretary

For general information, questions or to obtain hard copies and e-versions of the following resources:

  • Students & Alum | Sample corporate resumes & sample federal resumes, sample cover letter, or sample interview questions 
  • Employers | Registration for Spring or Fall Career Fair and Education Fair, a Reverse Career Fair
  • Employers | Advertising a job
  • Students, Alum & Employers | Providing assistance and resolve issues with employer, student or alum JLink accounts
  • Employers | Billing and payment for Career and Education Fairs
  • General questions about Career Services

Lola Johnston, Career Counselor

Meets with prospective JSU students, JSU Freshman - Junior classifications for the following:

  • Utilize assessments for career counseling in choosing a major and career (note:  an assessment will be used during this appointment, and some require a small fee, see Assessments page for more information)
  • Promotes part-time internship and co-op opportunities
  • Facilitates resume workshops and individual resume critique
  • Provides employment and life skills assistance
  • Requests to speak to student organizations
  • Career assessments such as Focus 2, Myers Briggs, and STRONG
  • Information gathering to help students succeed throughout their college career
  • Interview preparation for internship and co-op opportunities

Meets with faculty or staff to discuss:

  • Speaking to classes (prefer no less than 10 days advance notice)
  • Internships (NOT for course credit) and co-op opportunities
  • Utilizes Myers Briggs as a team building activity - requires a small fee, see Assessments page for more information
  • Marketing opportunities for the co-op & internship programs to help our students gain real-world experience

Meets with employers & community partners to discuss:

  • Hiring students as interns (not for academic credit)
  • Employing students in the co-op program
  • Advertising internships, co-op and part-time employment to our students

Becca Turner, Director

Meets with Seniors & Alum for the following:

  • Corporate and federal resume critique
  • Mock interviews & interview preparation for post terminal degree programs
  • Job search, specifically for full-time positions to include state & federal
  • Professional dress and image
  • Using JLink to search for employment & utilization of the Mentor Program
  • Safe Zone 
  • All other questions related to helping you succeed as a student at JSU

Meets with faculty or staff to discuss:

  • Education programming ideas for students, student groups & classes designed to help students in their first-destination career success
  • Connecting industry to students through classroom access
  • Sharing data
  • Collaboration to help our students succeed
  • STU320, Employability Skills

Meets with employers & community partners to discuss:

  • Building employer branding on-campus 
  • Facilitate connections through partnerships
  • Connecting industry to students through classroom access
  • Collecting hiring reports
  • Recruiting events and informational sessions (career fairs, networking nights, workshops)
  • Posting full-time jobs
  • Collaboration to help our students become employed
