To address safety concerns, the Commencement Committee and the administration are closely monitoring conditions in Alabama and particularly in Calhoun county, as well as following guidance from the Alabama Department of Public Health and the Governor’s office. We are also taking significant actions to address safety concerns.

Some highlights of these actions include the following:

  • Holding the ceremonies outside, in our open-air stadium, allows for appropriate social distancing for our graduates, faculty, and staff who will participate in ceremonies on the field.
  • Those participating in the ceremony on the field will be placed 6 feet apart throughout the ceremony.
  • With outdoor seating available in all parts of the stadium, graduates may invite as many guests as they choose, since there is sufficient space with appropriate social distance.
  • In the stadium, guests and family groups will be directed to be seated 6 feet apart from other guests and family groups.
  • Seating will be available for guests with disabilities on the 5th floor, Meehan Hall. For social distancing in this space, only one person may accompany a guest with a disability. No one from the outside seating will be allowed into the 5th floor. This will be strictly enforced.
  • All graduating students, faculty, staff, and guests will be required to wear masks.
  • We will have hand-sanitizing stations at key entry points to the stadium.
  • JSU will have bottled water available for all in attendance.

Official diplomas will be mailed within 3-4 weeks following graduation. If you have had an address change since filling out the online Application for Degree, please submit the Diploma Mailing Address Form by July 24, 2020 to provide the new address where your diploma is to be mailed. You may verify the diploma mailing address provided during the application process through your My.JSU account. Select "Registration," then "Student Records" and "View Application to Graduate."

Everyone in attendance will be required to wear masks. Graduates will be provided a mask at the ceremony and will be distanced from one another on the field and during processional/recessional. Only one row of graduates will be released at a time to go to the stage. Graduates will cross the stage wearing masks. Professional photographers will take photos of graduates onstage, wearing their masks, but will also take photos off-stage without masks before graduates return to their seats.

Guests must bring and wear their own masks. Each graduate’s guests are encouraged to sit together in the stadium and maintain a distance between themselves and other groups of guests.

To prevent the spread of COVID-19, graduates and guests exhibiting symptoms (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/symptoms-testing/symptoms.html), those who have cared for or visited with anyone diagnosed with the illness, those who have pending test results, and/or those who have been quarantined with or without symptoms in the last 14 days are asked to please stay home and enjoy the ceremony on JSU’s Facebook Live event.

The ceremonies have been moved to the morning and evening to avoid the hottest parts of the day. Guests are encouraged to wear a hat, sunscreen and light-colored clothing. Each ceremony is expected to last approximately two hours.

The number of guests will not be limited. Each graduate’s guests are encouraged to sit together in the stadium and maintain a distance between themselves and other groups of guests.

The Graduation Name Pronunciation Service is available for undergraduate candidates with concerns about the pronunciation of their name. Call 256-782-8392 and slowly state your name, student number, school of major, and name pronunciation.

Village Photographers will photograph every graduate as they cross the stage and receive their academic tube. A posed individual photo will also be taken of each graduate as they exit the stage. Free proofs of these photos will be sent by mail and e-mail to graduates and their families within one week of the ceremony. Printed packages start under $10; however, there is no obligation to buy.

Graduates will cross the stage wearing masks. Photographers will take photos of graduates onstage, wearing their masks, and off-stage without masks before graduates return to their seats.

To ensure that Village Photographers has the correct address information, please go to www.villagephotographers.com and click the blue "Sign up for Graduation Proofs" button. For additional information, contact Village Photographers at (334)821-9196 or at info@villagephotographers.com.

JSU welcomes your family and friends to the commencement ceremony.  North, south, and east sides of the stadium will be available for seating. Guests of each graduate are encouraged to sit together and maintain social distancing from other guests. To ensure that all graduates, the last to cross the stage as well as the first, are appropriately recognized, guests are asked to remain seated throughout the ceremony unless otherwise noted in the program. Jacksonville State Athletics' Clear Bag Policy will be followed at graduation.

The ceremony will be televised live on WEAC-TV24 (local Cable One Channel 9). Companies with TV 24 include Cable One (Anniston, Oxford, Munford, Pell city, and Jacksonville); Charter (Piedmont, Southside, and Heflin); Leesburg Cable; Collinsville Cable; Lookout Cable (Gaylesville); and Cherokee Co Cable (Centre).
